(Venetian Parchment, Gilded Parchment, Ming Poetry, Silver Sonata, Earthen Treasures and Reflections Collections)
The Parchment Collection papers will cover 15"W by 17"H
(approximately 1.6 sq. ft.), but they are produced slightly
larger to allow for the overlaps. Measuring for accurate
number of pieces needed for the job will require a
professional paperhanger. But for a “ball park“ cost
estimate, you can calculate the total square feet to be
covered and multiply by the square foot price.
For a piece count, first measure the width of each wall, and
divide it by 15", this will give you the number of pieces
for one row in width. Second measure the wall height and
divide that number by 17", this will give you the number of
pieces for one row in height. Round each of the "piece
counts" up to the next whole number. Now take the two "piece
counts" and multiply them. You now have an actual piece
count for that wall. Add the other walls, using the same
method and you will have the actual count for the room or
space. Yes, you can take out for doors and windows. Just
remember that there will be waste in these areas.
Example Below:
Square footage: A 7’ X 7’ wall = 49 sq ft.
Piece count: Width 84" divided by 15" = 5.6 pieces round to 6
Height 84" divided by 17" =4.94 pieces round to 5 5X6 = 30 pieces
Please include the following:
- The number of pieces required for your project

IMPORTANT NOTES
- Check all materials before cutting or installing. Jacobsen & Balla can not accept any labor claims.
- All of the Parchment pieces have random coloration and are not intended to side match.
- Uniform overlap on the papers is suggested and all inside corners should be spilt but continued around the corner to maintain the blocking integrity.
- DO NOT hang over previously installed wallcoverings. Jacobsen & Balla can not take responsibility for product performance when installed on improperly prepared walls.
WALL PREPARATION
Walls should be prepared as for all fine wallcoverings a clean, smooth,
and free of defects. Walls should be primed with a high
quality sealer that will provide a moisture barrier. Do not
use PVA. For a premium surface on which to install, try
lining paper, (blank stock) it makes the job faster and will
aid in the removal process. Good quality blank stock/lining
paper is available from www.paper-hanging.com
or by calling Bob Kelly at: 413-243-3489.
ADHESIVE AND FIRE RATING
Shur Stik 111 is required to maintain the ASTM E84, Class A
fire-code rating for commercial installations.
LAYOUT
- The Parchment Collection pieces are approximately 15" wide by 17" high.
- The preferred installation is similar to shingles. That is, starting at the bottom of the wall installing one row at
a time and proceeding with each successive row overlapping the previous row (the overlap should be down).
- Alternative layouts are pictured above. Please consult with the Designer for preferred layout.
- Overlap edges approximately 1 inch on the horizontal plane and approximately 1/2 inch on the vertical plane.
- They will expand vertically and horizontally.
- When applying to the wall, do not brush the creases or
flatten excessively with you brush or plastic smoother.
These creases are inherent in the Parchment series and
enhance the look of the finished product.
- To choose a starting point, begin with the center of the
wall height. Measure up and down to check the blocking,
allowing for approximately 1 inch or less of overlap.
Try to have the last row at the ceiling line and the row
at the base, or floor, approximately the same height.
NOTE: the spacing, top and bottom, is ultimately up to
the Installer and the Designer.
- It is important to install the materials as level and plum as possible.
- If you visualize a brick wall, consider the bricks as the Parchment squares and the overlap as the mortar.
NOTE: You may choose to overlap away from the light source or away from the eye level of your customer. Some
Parchment patterns are more translucent that others -- check any markings you are making on the walls for
strike through.
INSTALLATION
- For best results, we recommend using Sure Stik 111.
- With a small roller apply a thin coat of paste to the back of the material and book top to bottom for 5 minutes +/- this will give the material time to relax.
- Only paste as many as you can use before they become too dry to open.
- Any paste on the front can be seen easily and can be removed with a soft sponge.
SILVER SONATA
- The shipping box will contain parchment papers with and without the silver block. The ratio of ground pieces to silver block pieces is
2 to 1.
- Randomly place the silver block pieces throughout the installation while trying to avoid installing the pieces so that the silver blocks form vertical, horizontal or diagonal lines.
- The best way to test an entire wall is to lay out the pieces on the floor or tape them to the wall in the order you will install them. Stand back and look for any sight lines, as mentioned above, set up by the silver blocks. You want the blocks to flow and not set up any hard geometrical shapes.
- If you choose to tape the pieces to the wall, please use a medium stick adhesive tape and attach it to the back of the pieces.
MING POETRY
- The shipping box will contain parchment papers with and without the Ming Poetry rubbings. The ratio of ground pieces to rubbings pieces is
2 to 1.
- Randomly place the rubbings pieces throughout the installation while trying to avoid installing the pieces so that the rubbings create vertical, horizontal or diagonal lines.
The best way to test an entire wall is to lay out the pieces on the floor or tape them to the wall in the order you will install them. Stand back and look for any

- If you choose to tape the pieces to the wall, please use a medium stick adhesive tape and attach it to the back of the pieces.
NOTE: Each rubbing piece has top marked on back to help you place the calligraphy correctly, right side up. If you have any questions please call.
EARTHEN TREASURES, REFLECTIONS
- Installation Instructions, same as above.
- Vertical shift is the manufacturers preferred layout for these collections.
GILDED PARCHMENT
- Installation Instructions, same as above.
- Either Vertical Shift or Horizontal Shift. Please consult the designer for preferred layout.
HERE ARE SOME HELPFUL INSTALLATION HINTS FROM OUR EXPERT, JIM SCHWANDT:
- On your table tape down a piece of plastic or garbage bag to do
the pasting on. It's much easier to clean paste off plastic than wood.
- We recommend 111 paste but other installers have had good luck with clear.
- Paste only a few pieces at a time until you have a feel for the material then increase the number you paste at one time.
- Gentle pressure with a plastic sweep works well, but I have had success using a sponge and a soft brush sweep.
- Install from the bottom up to the ceiling, keeping the overlaps, which have the deckled edge, facing down.
- I work from left to right, use right to left if that's your preference.
- Clean as you go, wiping over the seam areas down and out to prevent lifting of the edges.
- Change your cleaning water often, and rinse your sponges constantly. Having to go back and do the whole wall later may be necessary to eliminate that pesky " paste haze".

The Artists’ Canvas Collections are handpainted on canvas which is 36"
wide and produced to order in 3 yard ( 9') or 4 yard (12')
panels Measuring for the number of panels needed for the job
will require a professional paperhanger. But, for a “ball
park” cost figure, you can measure the circumference of the
room and divide by 32" to give you an estimate of the number
of panels you need. Multiply the number of panels by 3 or 4
yards to get the number of yards you need. Your professional
paperhanger will want to know that the product comes in 36"
wide panels and will trim to 32"-33"wide. There is no
repeat, the pattern is random. We recommend that each panel
be trimmed to the same width to maintain consistency
throughout the installation.
WHEN PLACING A PURCHASE ORDER, PLEASE INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
- Each order is hand-produced for you. The standard put-up is 3 or 4 yard panels. Place your order with the number of
yards required, and the number of panels at the chosen length.
- For the best consistency between panels, it is suggested to order all 3 yard or all 4 yard panels when possible.
Custom colors, and custom lengths ( up to 21 feet ) are available. Please call for details.
- Please include the following: Collection Name, Color Name, a cutting from your approved sample, a 50% deposit for CBD
terms, Bill to and Ship to address with contact phone numbers and names.
- Place your order, example, 36 yds 12 X 3 yard panels. Collection: Athena, Color: Olympus Ivory.
CUSTOM ORDERS
- Custom orders are available. We will need something to match to such as fabric, paint chips, flooring materials, etc. Please call for a quick consultation.
- Many of the colors and patterns of the Parchment Collection can be customized. For example, Ming Poetry and Silver Sonata can be ordered without motif.
- The Parchment Collection can be ordered in custom sizes...with some restrictions. Please call if you are considering this option.

WALL PREPARATION
Walls should be prepared as for all fine wallcoverings – clean, smooth,
and free of defects. Wall liner or blank stock is highly
recommended. Blank stock provides a predictable substrate of
uniform porosity on which to install fine wallcoverings and
helps to reduce air bubbles that form in the curing process.
IMPORTANT NOTES
Check all materials before cutting or installing. Jacobsen & Balla can
not accept any labor claims. Uniform panel widths are
suggested and all corners should be wrapped to maintain the
continuity of the panel width. If the inside corners are not
perfectly true, you will need to split the panel. The
balance of that panel can then be installed to a plumb line
and trimmed into the corner. Pre-shade the panels by taping
on the wall, and adjust for the best shading from panel to
panel. There is no pattern match and panels can be reversed,
but it is not required. Pre-shading on the wall is far more
accurate than viewing the panels on the floor or any
horizontal surface. This extra step will ensure a more
professional and artistic outcome.
ADHESIVE
Clay based or premixed heavy duty clear adhesives are recommended for these products.
METHOD
For best results, trim panels to a width of 32"- 33", and use a
“Butt Seam” method. Apply a light coat of adhesive directly
to the back side of the wallcovering. Book for 5 to 10
minutes so the necessary expansion can occur. Avoid getting
adhesive on the face of the wallcovering. As with any
high-end handpainted wallcovering, exercise caution in
working with these products as excessive rubbing or scraping
can cause marring of the surface paint.
